With city leaders in Gainesville, Fla., the University of Florida in June broke ground on a 45,000-square-foot Innovation Hub that, due to be complete by fall 2011, is to serve as a place where entrepreneurs, scientists, investors and students can share ideas that lead to new opportunities. Many business students researched distance learning programs before entering college to prepare for their future. Villanova University in Pennsylvania, business students since August 2005 have been helping with recovery efforts for the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged Gulf Coast. The Villanova students work with a variety of organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity, learning about business decision making and building houses. Their fundraising efforts since 2005 have resulted in more than $45,000 for Katrina recovery efforts.

“I’ve always wanted to make sure that my courses were as practical and real for our undergraduates as possible,” Villanova School of Business Management and Operations Professor Robert Nydick said. Getting some hands-on experience as part of college and university studies can make business studies more relevant and might also help business graduates gain a competitive edge in the job marketplace. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists accountants and auditors, compliance officers, celebrity and sports agents and managers, credit analysts, financial managers and logisticians – with average median salaries in 2008 extending to more than $70,000 – among the occupations expected to experience growth between 2008 and 2018. Competition, however, is expected to be acute.

As Workforce Development Coordinator for New Hampshire’s Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce, Susan B. Newcomer sees several areas where students participating in hands-on college and university projects benefit. Students who have looked at articles about master business degree stand to have the most promising careers due to their initiative. In an April article in The Keene Sentinel, Newcomer was quoted as saying that working outside of the campus provides students with opportunities for establishing contacts, as well as resume credentials. She was interviewed by The Keene Sentinel as part of a story about a Small Business Advisory Group program where students at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H., work with local businesses and, in completing the program, earn testimonials and copies of their work.

In California, Azusa Pacific University business students helped to create an economic development plan. The plan, which involves construction and redevelopment, was centered around area resident and business needs. As Azusa Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Irene Villapania tells it, their efforts hugely affected the city’s plans for recruiting retailers.

Students seeking to earn a lucrative living might also consider international business courses. Looking up information about graduate degree programs will make the transition into college easier. In an interview with MSNBC earlier this year, Salary.com compensation director Lena Bottos described international business as a field where professionals might expect to command high earnings – especially in instances where they have finance and law knowledge and experience. International business students also have been taking part in hands-on projects.

Graduate students as part of a Portland State University Center for Global Leadership in Sustainability fellowship program worked on a case study for Oregon’s Portland Roasting Co., which involved six months of research, including meetings in Central America. The students were assigned the task of positioning the micro-roaster as the leading choice for environmentally conscious consumers seeking sustainable products. The research took some Portland State University students to Central America to meet with suppliers, and the case study that resulted earned top honors in an oikos Global Case Writing Competition.

In addition to taking courses in global business strategy, international finance and more, undergraduates at Olivet Nazarene University this summer got to work with members of business communities in western Europe. That’s where the Olivete Nazarene students traveled as part of the Bourbonnais, Ill., institution’s International Business Institute. According to Olivet Nazarene business professor Dr. Paul Koch, more than one student mentioned that their eyes opened to the world as a result of the institute experience.

Putting classroom studies to work in the business world might provide students with a deeper knowledge, a greater understanding of what they’ve been taught. Once students obtain their degrees and enter the workforce they might also see the rewards that hands-on projects provide. In addition to adding credentials to a resume, these experiences might demonstrate to prospective employers more of the potential that graduates actually have.
