Get Your College Degree And Become A Gaming Developer!

Your favorite video game, whether it’s something as simple as Bejeweled or as elaborate as Call of Duty, is all the work of a team of designers, programmers, animators, technicians and testers. Overseeing all these people though is one person, the game developer.

At his or her core, a game developer is the leader of game designers and programmers who turn either a licensed property or an original idea into a piece of interactive entertainment you can purchase at your favorite retail outlet. They usually rose up the same ranks of specialists they now supervise, but have generalized a bit more to further understand whatever else their other employees do as part of the team. If you need more information about online university, look on the internet.

It’s also a highly creative position as the basis of the game starts with the developer. Many these days keep their eyes on publications such as the Hollywood Reporter or Variety for the next ultra popular book, sport, TV show or movie, and then try to figure out how to make a game out of it.

If anything, the business aspect of the job is becoming bigger and bigger as the industry does the same. For instance, a company that comes up with a truly original idea can be sitting on a licensing goldmine, causing a secondary cash stream from such licensed merchandise as TV/movie rights, action figures and even apparel. Don’t think the developer’s employer, the software publisher, isn’t mindful of this. The employee must be too. For any additional information about online degree programs accredited check the internet.

If that isn’t enough, a developer must also keep abreast of innovations in such fields as artificial intelligence, 3D graphics, digitized sound and others. When Apple announced its new iPad or Microsoft announces what it’s now calling its “slim” Xbox, the developer also must see how this affects his product.

Most jobs for game programmers specify a bachelor’s degree (in mathematics, physics, computer science, “or equivalent experience”). Many online colleges offer courses and degrees in game programming. Any such degrees should offer a well-rounded education that includes all the fundamentals of software engineering and some side courses in business management. From there, it’s up to the developer to work his way up the chain of command.

So even though there’s a very serious side to gaming, this doesn’t mean it can’t be a source of some serious fun. A good developer earns about $100,000 a year. The employment contract also comes with things like insurance, retirement programs and profit sharing as part of the total deal. That last part is creating a number of young millionaires. There is an abundance of information about online graduate schools on the web.

As it stands, the gaming industry was valued at over $20 million last year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects growth to be exceptional thanks to the constant technological innovation.
