Doing your own pest control can save you money, but you need to take precautions and steps before you use pest control products yourself.

First, you must identify the pest problem. If you don’t know what you are dealing with then you cannot know the best and most effective solution ridding yourself of the pests. There are many free sources on the internet to help you identify the pest you have.

Second, figure out how much pest control you will need to do. If you find a few ants in your kitchen, you don’t have to start digging a trench around your home, or calling a fumigator. Once you know what kind of pest you are dealing with, you need to figure out how badly they have infested your home. Do they have a nest inside your home? Are they coming from outside? Can you set baited traps and dust the perimeter of your home? Knowing where the insects are nesting, and how many will help you decide these things.

Third, choose an effective option (normally baited traps) and implement it. There are many different methods for dealing with pests in or around your home. Depending on the situation you can choose whatever method you want for your arrangements and time.

Forth, evaluate the results and prepare for the future. If your chosen method does not have the results you wanted; for example your baited traps don’t attract the ants, you may want to try a liquid trap of a different brand. If that works, then you can dust the perimeter of your home to stop them in the future from even coming into your home.

Preventing pests from entering your home is easy. You need to eliminate sources of food for them. This means keeping your kitchen food in sealed containers and to keep your trash outdoors and covered. There are also many beneficial animals around your home; Purple Martin’s, some spiders, centipedes and lady bugs keep many pests in your garden under control. Lady bugs are particularly effective against aphids and are readily available at local yard care stores!

Always take care when using any pesticides including traps. It is highly recommended to use gloves and to take a shower after using any spraying or dusted pesticides. For some traps and aerosol sprays you can just wash your hands after use. When disposing of chemicals never throw away more than one gallon of liquid pesticide a week, and no more than 5 pounds of dry pesticide a week. The best disposal of chemicals is ‘use as directed’. You can save money by doing your own pest control, but you must be responsible and only use them as directed.
