How do I get surround sound from my TV to the HTIB setup I purchased?

I have a 42″ panasonic plasma tv (TH-42PX75U). I also have a Samsung digital Home theatre system with wireless rear speakers (what made me purchase it). I’ve connected my PS3 and XB360 to my TV using HDMI. I tried running optical cable from the TV to the receiver/dvd player. I cannot get the rear speakers to output any sound via either directly from the TV, the PS3 or the XBOX (switching on the TV). If i digital out from the PS3 directly to the samsung, it works, but for some reason I’m not getting any 5.1 from my TV.

Connect optical cable directly from PS3 and Xbox to system for surround sound, not from TV to system.
