Three Ways To Ruin Your Home Theater Experience
Every passing year, movie box offices set new records. Recession or otherwise, even with 11% unemployment (and some say its 17%, that’s almost one out of every five people), movies continue to do well. The big production houses like Warner Bros, Universal, Disney and others continue to spend bigger budgets than ever on new technology life-like animation and amazingly creative scripts. All that, to entertain you and your friends and family for those 2 hours where you leave your world that you live in day in and day out, and step into theirs where you empathize with Harry Potter’s pain or admire Gandalf’s might.
In this almost religious experience, it’s easy to mess it up. And I’ve seen it done over the years, again and again. People spend thousands on their home theater set up. Expensive electronics, fancy décor, Etc. but they miss the basics. And I’ll point three of those most annoying home theater mistakes that you should avoid.
- Place bad or boring furniture in your home theater: Your home theater furniture should ideally not be your regular couch and love seat. Plan your home theater room right from the beginning. There are special home theater seats and chairs available these days. They are relaxing and offer an almost movie-like experience. Some even include speakers that integrate with your system. All of them make your viewers comfortable and in a movie-mood. There are even cozy-couple chairs and lazyboy-like chairs that you can add to the room to satisfy everyone’s taste. There is just too many ways to do it but it’s an important aspect that should not be ignored. Bad seating can ruin a movie experience.
Your furniture doesn’t have to be too fancy. I’ve seen some that cost $5000 per seat, in exotic leather prints, Etc. It doesn’t have to be that way. Plan it wisely and be creative in your choices. Make a room that is enjoyable and fun.
- Ignore the screen and sound system in proportion to room size: This one is a classic. I guess when people build their homes and home theater rooms, big screen TV’s were a lot more expensive. But over the years, they’ve become a lot cheaper and new TV technologies are hitting the market all the time. Like the 3D TVs that are the rage now. Well, that’s great, but you can’t just upgrade your screen without regard for the room size. Recently I went for a movie where I returned with a headache because the screen was too big for the room – it was like watching a movie from the first seat and who likes that! Plan room size and distance of the seats from the screen thoughtfully. Plan for future screen sizes to get bigger.
- Decorate the room with specific posters: OK, when you watch a Jackie Chan movie, it’s awesome to enter a home theater that has Jackie Chan posters and factoids everywhere. That’s really cool. But when I am watching Harry Potter, it’s a BIG turn off. Worse, a serene waterfall or forest wallpaper while watching a war movie almost has the same effect. You spend thousands on the right equipment and furniture. Spend a little bit more and either plan décor that’s fun but neutral, or better, change it for every screening or often. Order movie posters before the screening. Add a little candy cart in one corner. Take bets for the movie suspense. Think creatively to make your movie watching experience different and memorable.
