Hi I would like to know how much is 850 RMS in WATTS (PMPO?
I have bought a sony home theatre system, which says the output is 850W RMS, then how much it will in watts(PMPO) . my question is how to calculate this RMS while comparing with some HI FI systems when they say in WATTS(PMPO).
The only watts that any consumer should look at is watts RMS @ 20 Hz – 20 KHz per channel (8 ohms if your speakers are 8 ohms.)
Or watts program @ 20 Hz – 20 KHz per channel (8 ohms if your speakers are 8 ohms.)
Program is closer to real world use than RMS, but not as commonly listed as RMS.
watts RMS @ 1KHz per channel is another useless bit of information, unless you plan on only listening to a 1KHz note & nothing else.
The wattage output of a surround sound amp isn’t very important, there isn’t a big enough difference to worry about it. The difference between how much louder your speakers will sound from a 200 RMS @ 20 Hz – 20 KHz per channel amplifier than a 100 RMS @ 20 Hz – 20 KHz per channel amplifier is negligible.
The most important number to look at the THD %.
(Percentage of Total Harmonic Distortion.
An amplifier should be at least 0.05% THD @ 20 Hz – 20 KHz or lower.
0.1% THD @ 20 Hz – 20 KHz or higher is too high.
Digital ins & outs mean nothing if your amplifier is distorting the signal to your speakers with high THD.
