How good a laptop do you need to be able to play mkv files?

i have a little net book that is fine to play Movies from itunes and Avi files but mkv files don’t play properly, what spec’s in a laptop should i look for to be able play all files you can download off the net.. Would a 500 dollar laptop be good enough?

mkv can be played smoothly on a 200$ laptop as well, so your 500$ System will do very good
