I need an HD video player thin client?
Hi,
i’m looking for a video thin client that should satisfy the following requirements:
- HD video 720p (we don’t use 1080p)
- WiFi N
- HDMI out
- ability to connect to network drives / SMB shares (Media files are stored centralized on a NAS)
- should play all file types, especially H.264 encoded MKV containers.
- fan-less design preferred
In a perferct world it’d be wall mountable.
I was searching the net, but most stuff i find has local storage to put media on (something we don’t want/need) or requires streaming servers such as iTunes which we don’t use.

Search for “media servers”. Some names are Popcorn Hour, Linksys and Western Digital and ASUS.
Hint: Go to EngadgedHD website as they often list announcements about media servers.
Some of them DO have local storage, but some have wired or wireless network to your PC.
You might find some w/o local storage which would help with the fanless design. But you dont want wall mount because the unit has to have a front panel to let you use a remote to scroll through folders and select media to play.
