how do i set up surround sound speaker system?

I have just moved house and have been left a 5.1ch Technika surround sound speaker system comprising of 5 speakers with different coloured cables and a box which has coloured plugs co-ordinating with the colours on the cables and an electrical plug and a black audio input port. Now the ex-owners said you just plug it into your dvd but im confused! There are no instructions! My dvd player also has the coloured plugs like the box so where do the cables go into, box or dvd player? How do i hook up the system?

Here’s what you need to know, read the back of the receiver. They do have something written on the back of it.

For example the back should have something like DVD in. Just follow the colours. For the video component of your DVD.

1) If your connecting component video you should see Red, Green, Blue

2) If you are connecting composite video you should see Yellow

3) If it’s a s-video signal you should see a circular connector with a different pattern than the other connectors. It looks like this:

The audio part:
1) Analog Audio – RED and Blue or RED and White

2) Digital audio- I’ve seen this in different color sometimes it’s orange, sometimes it’s black.

Read the back of your receiver to be sure.

Now for the speakers? I’m not sure how this receiver looks like. Is there a speaker binding post?

Anyways try to arrange them like this: Front Right, Center and Left

Then put the 2 rear speakers at the back, left and right.

Then put the subwoofer in front as well.
