Wireless

Imagine having an Internet service that comes with the high speed connections of broadband services like DSL and cable, but without having to deal with the burdensome cords and wires that such services require in order for you to be able to get online. Sounds pretty nice, right? Well, now you do not have to just imagine such a connection. In recent years, wireless Internet has taken off as an increasingly popular broadband alternative to wired service. Its convenience and ease of use are the two driving factors behind this trend. High speed wireless Internet comes in two basic forms. These are WiFi and WiMax. The following instructions will serve as a guide to help you get your hands on whichever of these two types of service you choose.

Getting WiFi service is a fairly simple process. In order to be able to use this type of wireless Internet, you will need a wireless router and some type of wired broadband service (unlike WiMax, WiFi is actually a wireless extension of a wired service, rather than a entirely wireless service by itself). You will want to get in touch with your current DSL or cable provider (or sign up for one of these services if you do not already have a subscription) and ask about the wireless upgrades that they have to offer. Then arrange a time for a service technician to stop by your home to install the proper equipment. Depending on the specific service plan you have, you may not have to pay any additional fees to establish a WiFi network in your home.

As an alternative, if you are good at reading instructions and have a little technical experience under your belt, you may prefer to set up your own WiFi network and not have to worry about having to make an apointment with a professional. If you are going to go this route, you will need to purchase the wireless router yourself. These should be easy to find in any local electronics, department, or computer parts store. You can also shop online for more options and to find bargains. Regardless of where you get your router, you will want to make sure you select one that has a strong signal. This means it should be capable of about 108 Mbps or more. Your router will come with an instruction manual that will tell you specifically how to go about connecting it to your modem and using it.

WiMax, short for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a newer and growing form of high speed wireless Internet. Unlike WiFi, WiMax networks operate completely independently of wires and cables, at least on your end. The way this works is that you use a portable modem that plugs directly into your laptop’s USB port and communicates with a series of transmission towers located throughout your area. You can also access WiMax networks from recent models of cell phones. Contact a provider near you to find out how to sign up for this service.
